Are you in basic agreement with the direction the City is currently taking to promote expansion and growth? ( General ) Yes, the City has done a good job balancing the growth and still providing a quality of life for the citizens of Olathe. The City needs to pay attention that they do not get bogged down with rules and regulations that will impede growth and hurt the citizens because they have so many layers that the common sense of the original purpose is lost. Communications is vital to the City, so that they can communicate with each other and with the Citizens.

We need to be proactive to attract the developers for commercial and residential projects so that they will be able to provide a quality development that will meet the needs of the developers to make and profit and yet provide the citizens with good housing and businesses. A strong economic development plan and enticements to attract national companies to our community will help provide jobs and business opportunities that will further enhance the quality of life for the people of Olathe.

With the economy challenges the opportunities are great for the City to provide opportunities that will benefit the community as a whole.
What suggestions, if any, would you have as a member of the City Council to promote collaboration between members of the Council, city staff, and the community in achieving strategic directions established for the City of Olathe? ( General ) Keep an open mind, look at the big picture. Ask important questions, how does it affect the citizens, the businesses, and the City services when making plans and ordinances? Communicate the plans and goal and do not make decisions one sided, for example special interest groups need to be weighed against the good of the people. Make decisions that are in the best interest of the Citizens and Business owners.
What do you see as the major role of the City Council? ( General ) Managed growth and keep the quality of life strong in Olathe. Keep focused on a Healthy Business environment and do not waste money nothings that are not in the business plan and the future model of Olathe’s goals for the Citizens and Business.

Safety’s going to be a big issue; we need to have a strong focus as the City grows to have public safety and officers in force to provide for the protection of our Citizens as we grow.

Be mindful of where to save money and not necessarily by cutting benefits. I understand the City can save 1.2 Million dollars a year, by changing companies where they currently dumping our trash. Sell the transfer station and get a long term use permit when negotiating. I believe we need to be mindful of our citizens rather than protective of our territory
As a member of City Council, what would your major priorities be for the City for the next 10 to 15 years? ( General ) To continue to plan for the quality of life for residents and business.

Stay focus on UDO’s that makes sense and doesn’t overburden the developers and citizens
Housing that is affordable for the citizens and has quality developments for the business that is attractive and safe.
Keep our infrastructure in working order
Improve on roads and traffic flows
Partnerships with Olathe Schools to provide quality education
Work with the State Representatives to provide revenue to help our costs of growth.
Save money with out butting benefits

Would you support additional sources of revenues to meet high priority needs of public safety, transportation, and economic development? ( General ) I do not want higher taxes, I want accountability to the funds that we are spending and focus on reduction of expenses that is not contributing to the core mission of the City of Olathe.

We need to build business opportunities that can help fund our needs. Hotels, shopping centers, venue that brings visitors to our City is important to our tax basis.
What level of priority would you place on the following?
  • Public safety
  • Traffic and streets
  • Consensus building and stability in leadership
( General )
My first is Consensus Building and Stability in Leadership, if you start with leadership then you have the platform to build the other issues, public safety is very important, traffic and streets are also important. That is were leadership comes in, if you vote because of special interest you have in a rock quarry, then you are not voting for the Citizens who are impeded by all the damage that the trucks are causing on our roads. Integrity in the leadership is doing what is right for the Citizens.
What are the three biggest challenges the City of Olathe faces and what should be done to address them? ( General ) Attracting quality jobs, business, shopping, and homes to Olathe, then having the resources to service and provide a quality lifestyle in the parks, schools, and city services. Communicate the vision and plan for Olathe to our Citizens and business partners.
Do you support current policy on economic development tax incentives? If no, please specify recommended additions or deletions to the policy. ( General ) Yes, we need to attract quality business and economic developments to the City, however we must have check marks that allow for accountability to the City for the benefits that they receive.
